Overview
An appendicitis surgery or appendectomy is the removal of the infected or inflamed appendix.
An appendix is a small pouch-like organ attached to the first section of the small intestine.
Appendicitis can be life-threatening if the appendix gets inflamed and ruptures leaking the bacteria into the entire belly.
It is difficult to diagnose the early signs of appendicitis. Usually, it begins with mild pain around the belly button area, and gradually as the symptom progresses, the pain intensifies and becomes unbearable.
If you have appendicitis, there are high chance that the appendix may burst within 48 to 72 hours which can be life-threatening.
Once appendicitis is diagnosed, the doctor will perform an appendectomy which is an emergency procedure to remove the inflamed or infected appendix and in case of a ruptured appendix, the doctor will wash and drain the fluids and pus from the belly.
