Overview
A fistula is an infected channel or connection that develops between two organs. The medical condition can occur at any part of the body but the most common are anal fistulas.
Fistulas that cannot be treated with medications need surgery. A anal fistula surgery is performed to remove anal and rectal fistulas.
The surgeon may perform a fistulectomy to cut and remove the connected tissue or fistula. It is generally an outpatient procedure and is typically performed under general or local anesthesia.
Alternatively, the surgeon can use a seton drain placement to drain the infection to treat a complex fistula and keep the fistula under control.
