Overview

Sinusitis is the inflammation of the tissues of the sinuses. The spaces or cavities inside the nose and the head are called the sinuses. The sinuses have an inner lining of tissues that produce mucus that keeps the area moist and protects it from dust and allergens. The sinuses drain the mucus and keep the inner tissue lining free from germs and allergens. Healthy sinuses are filled with air.

Mucus buildup in the sinuses can cause the growth of bacterial infection, blockage, stuffy nose, and swelling around the eyes and the face.

In most cases, sinusitis may last up to ten days but may take longer to heal if there is a bacterial infection.

What causes sinusitis

Sinusitis is mostly caused by viruses and allergens. Common colds can inflame the nasal passages and lead to infection.

Causes that can trigger sinusitis include:

  • Influenza
  • Cilia or small hair present in the inner lining of the sinus may often fail to drain out the mucus
  • Bacterial infections caused by bacteria like streptococcus pneumoniae, haemophilus influenzae, or Moraxella catarrhalis
  • Seasonal allergies
  • Nasal polyps
  • Deviated nasal septum
  • Nasal tumors
  • Medications that affect the immune system
  • Blocked drainage ducts
  • A structural problem of the nose or the ducts are too narrow
  • Weak immune system
  • Tooth infection
  • Exposure to second-hand smoke
  • Nose injury
  • Hay fever

Can I prevent sinusitis?

Sinusitis is a painful condition and if left untreated can spread to the surrounding brain tissues and increase the risks of developing meningitis which can be life-threatening. It can also cause a condition called orbital cellulitis where the tissues of the surrounding eyes are infected.

The good news is sinusitis can be easily prevented.

Tips to prevent sinusitis

Wash hands

A lot of bacterial and viral infections spread through contaminated hands. Wash hands frequently to prevent the accumulation of germs that can enter the nasal cavities.

Remember to wash your hands before touching your face or wiping your nose when you return from outside.

Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer while traveling to disinfect the hands.

Get flu vaccine

Consult your doctor and get a yearly flu shot to defend yourself against seasonal viral infections.

Take care of the nasal passage

Keep the nasal area moist and clean. You can use nasal saline or sprays to keep the area moist. The cilia works best when it is moist. Inhaling steam is an effective way to clear the nasal passage and remove blockages.

Try avoiding nasal irritants

Cigarettes, smoke, pollution, perfumes, certain chemicals, or incense sticks may irritate the nasal lining. Limit your exposure to nasal irritants to prevent sinusitis.

Drink water regularly and avoid smoking or drinking alcohol that can dry the body and the sinus linings.

Manage allergies

Get your allergies checked. Certain allergies may cause frequent sinusitis. The doctor will prescribe medications or antihistamines to treat the allergies and reduce the risk of recurrent sinusitis.

If you are allergic to dust, wear a mask while going outside. Clean the air conditioner filter frequently to remove dust.

Use decongestants with caution. Long use of decongestants can be addictive and worsen the stuffiness of the nasal passage.

Keep the house clean

Sinusitis and other infections spread through surface areas of the house. Disinfect doorknobs, kitchen countertops, keyboards, remotes, mobile phones, and other areas that you frequently touch.

Healthy lifestyle

Boost your immunity by eating healthy foods, citrus fruits that are rich in vitamin C, and probiotics. Exercise regularly and get enough sleep to rest the body.

Stop your suffering NOW

Don't just jump into a surgery because your doctor is advising you to go for it. Consult our doctors to know if you need a surgery at all. Rest assured, we WON'T recommend you surgery unless it's the last resort.
