Overview
A cystoscopy procedure examines the urinary tract, mainly the bladder, urethra, and ureters.
A diagnostic cystoscopy examines the interior of the urinary tract and the prostate. A cystoscopy is also used for therapeutic purposes and treating certain ailments like extraction of bladder or kidney stones, collecting a sample tissue for biopsy, etc.
A diagnostic cystoscopy is a simple procedure and can be done in an outpatient facility. The procedure is also performed to treat a disease and is done in an operating room under a general anesthetic.
The cost of a cystoscopy procedure may vary depending on the city you are residing in, the type of medical facility, or the type of procedure.
Why is cystoscopy performed?
Your healthcare provider may perform a cystoscopy to diagnose the following conditions:
- Bladder incontinence or lack of bladder control
- Urinary retention or inability to expel urine completely
- Burning sensation or pain during urination (dysuria)
- The presence of abnormal or cancer cells in the urine
- Abnormal or cancerous tissue in the bladder or urethra
- Blockage in the bladder
- Prostate bleeding
- Enlarged prostate
- Congenital abnormalities
- Hematuria (blood in the urine)
- Urethral cancer
- Bladder cancer
- Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
- Urethral strictures
- Traumatic injury to the bladder or other parts of the urinary tract system
- Ulcers
Cystoscopy is also performed for the following treatments:
- Extraction of urethral or bladder stones
- Removal of tumors or abnormal tissues
- Collecting tissue samples for biopsy
- Inject a dye to get an X-ray of the urinary flow
- Inject medication for treating urinary leakage
- Collect urine samples from the ureter
- Removal of ureteral stent that was placed in a prior procedure
- Treat fistulas or urethral strictures
Cystoscopy procedure
Cystoscopies are mostly performed as an outpatient procedure and do not need special preparations. However, if the cystoscopy is performed for the treatment of a condition, you may need some preparation.
Your healthcare provider or nurse may instruct you to:
- Stop taking certain medications like blood thinners before the procedure
- Stop drinking fluids or eating a few hours before the procedure
- Empty your bladder before the procedure starts
- Ask someone to assist you or take you home after the procedure is complete
- A rigid cystoscopy may need additional preparation
- Provide medical history
How cystoscopy is performed:
A cystoscopy is performed in two ways:
Flexible cystoscopy
In flexible cystoscopy, you will be asked to lie down on the examination table or a couch. A numbing gel is applied.
The doctor inserts a flexible, bendy cystoscope into your urethra and gradually moves it towards the bladder. A sterile solution will be pumped inside your bladder. This allows the doctor to get better pictures of the interior of the urinary tract. After the procedure, the cystoscope is gently removed.
You will be asked to go to the toilet to release yourself.
Rigid cystoscopy
In a rigid cystoscopy, the cystoscope is rigid and cannot be bent. You may be advised not to eat or drink anything before the procedure. It is usually done under general anesthesia.
The doctor injects a sterile solution into the bladder. This gives a good view of the inner lining of the bladder.
After the test, the cystoscope is removed. You have to stay at the medical facility for a few hours till the anesthesia wears off and you are fit to go home.

Cost of cystoscopy in Bangalore
A cystoscopy is mainly performed as a diagnostic procedure to identify disorders such as benign growths, blockages, bladder or ureter problems, etc.
The cost mainly depends on the type of procedure. The cost is more if the procedure is performed to diagnose and treat a medical condition such as identifying bladder stones and removing them.
The cost of cystoscopy in Bangalore ranges from Rs. 31,000 to Rs. 75,000.
There are a few factors that may influence the cost of the procedure:

- Your overall health. You may need a hospital stay depending on your overall health, complications if any, and type of treatment
- The location and city are also important. Hospital charges in big metro cities are higher compared to tier 2 and tier 3 cities
