Overview
Sinusitis and sinus infection are inflammation or infection of the sinuses. Sinuses are structures or narrow passages in the forehead, cheeks, nose, and eyes. Normally, they are filled with air. Allergies and bacterial or viral infections can cause fluid accumulation in the sinuses. This causes inflammation of the face and blockage of the nose along with other symptoms.
Recovery depends on the type of sinusitis and its symptoms. Sinusitis can resolve easily on its own or using certain home remedies. Sometimes, the sinusitis can become chronic and may need further treatment with antibiotics.
How to treat sinusitis at home?
There are a variety of home treatments that can provide relief to the symptoms and cure sinusitis.
Nasal irrigation
Rinsing the sinus passages loosens the thick mucus, flushes them out, and removes the blockage. There are several ways to flush sinuses. A neti pot is a device used to irrigate the nasal passages. It looks like a teapot that holds saline water and helps to rinse the nose. A bulb syringe or squeeze bottle can also be used to flush and remove the mucus from the nose. This removes the blockage and aids in easy breathing.
It is important to read the directions before using the devices. Keep the device clean before usage and only use sterile or salt water for rinsing. Avoid tap water as it can spread germs and cause other infections.
Increase fluid intake
Water and fluids keep the body hydrated and improve body immunity. Fresh fruit juices and herbal tea can build immunity and help the body fight the infection.
Avoid drinking too much caffeine or alcohol as it dries the body. It drains the salt and water through urination and can cause dehydration. Drink at least 8 ounces of water every day.
Take steam
Steam inhalation loosens the mucus, clears the nasal congestion, and provides quick relief to sinusitis.
Boil water in a pot or kettle. Transfer the water to a large steady bowl and keep it on the table. Sit comfortably near the table. Keep your head above the bowl and make sure to maintain some distance. Cover your head with a thick towel. The towel should fall along the sides of the bowl so that the steam does not escape. Inhale the steam for about 10 to 12 minutes or until the steam dissipates.
You can also take a hot shower to release the mucus.
Eat healthy
Include more fresh fruits and vegetables that are loaded with antioxidants in your diet. Vegetables and fruits high in antioxidants include avocados, broccoli, oranges, carrots, strawberries, cantaloupe, cauliflower, bell pepper, etc.
Foods with antibacterial properties can help in fighting the infection. They prevent the growth of microorganisms and boost immunity. Add herbs and spices like garlic, ginger, cloves, rosemary, and parsley while preparing meals.
Use a humidifier
Humidifiers release moisture into the air. If the air you are breathing is too dry, it can irritate your nose. It can dry the mucus and make it difficult to remove. Humidifiers add moisture to the air and loosen the mucus.
One drawback of using a humidifier is that it can lead to mold buildup, so it is important to clean the humidifier regularly.
Use warm and cold compresses
You can use warm and cold compresses to get relief from sinus pain and inflammation. Lay back on the bed or sofa. Put a warm compress over your head, nose, and face for one to two minutes. Now replace the warm compress with a cold compress and keep it for 30 seconds. This can be done several times a day for quick relief of sinus pain.
A hot foot bath can also help to remove sinus congestion. Immerse your foot in a bucket with hot water and keep it there for 8 to 10 minutes. At the same time, you can put a cold cloth on your face to stimulate the blood circulation.
Hot soups
Hot soups and beverages can help reduce sinus inflammation. Prepare a hot chicken soup or vegetable soup and drink it while it is hot. A hot tea with ginger and honey can be consumed several times a day to provide relief to sinusitis symptoms.
Over-the-counter (OTC) medications
Your pharmacist can recommend common OTC medications for treatment. They can improve nasal flow and reduce inflammation and congestion. If you are suffering from high blood pressure or any other underlying disease, consult your doctor before taking any OTC medicine.
